Clara Mei Warwick McCoy

Clara Mei Warwick McCoy was born on May 14, 2013 at 12:20am.  She was 8 lbs and 1.6 oz and 21 inches long.  Her birth was quite the adventure for Patrick and I.  I woke up at 2 am on May 13th with contractions.  They were 10 mins apart and not too bad so I just stayed in bed for a while to see if they would continue.  I had contractions several times the week before that always stopped so I wasn’t too sure what to think of these.  By 5:30 am they were still 10 mins apart but too painful to stay in bed so I got up.  Once I was up they starting coming much faster and by 6:30 am they were coming every 4- 5 mins and I decided to wake Patrick up because this seemed like it was the real thing.

Once Xander was off to school we went to the hospital; we got there at 9:3o am and found out I was 4 cm dilated.  They said “congratulations, you are staying and  going to have a baby today!”  Things went well for the rest of the morning.  I was doing good without medication and things were progressing.

I really liked sitting on the birth ball for the 1st few hours.

At 1:3o I thought my water might have broken, but it hadn’t so the doctor went ahead and broke it for me.  This is when we discovered there was meconium in my water.  The doctor said not to worry they would just have the pediatric team at the delivery to make sure they got it all out of her lungs when she was born. When they broke my water I was at 6 cm.   Now that my water was broken my contractions became much more intense.  I got into the shower and that was great.  The warm water really helped and I did well for several hours more.  At 4:30 pm, they needed me to get out of the shower for a while to monitor the baby and this really freaked me out.  The contractions were really intense and coming 1 min apart.  I was barely handling them in the shower and I didn’t think I could do it laying in the bed.  I had them check me again to see how far along I was.  When they said I was still at 6 cm I asked for an epidural.  This was the best decision I have ever made!  It was so nice to get to relax; my epidural worked great.

I really thought once I had the epidural that things would get moving and we’d be ready to push soon.  However, that wasn’t the case.  Every time they checked me I was still at 6 cm.  Nothing they did helped me to progress any further.  So at 11:45 pm my doctor came in and said, “You failed labor” and I had to agree.  Clara was just being a very stubborn little girl and she would just not get into the right position to come down naturally.  Our only choice now was to have a csection.  At this point I was ready to meet her and have her out safely so I was all for it.  It didn’t take long for them to get us all ready and back there for surgery.

All ready to be wheeled into surgery.

At 12:20 am Clara Mei was born and I remember the doctor saying what rosie checks she had.  The pediatric team took her right away to suction the fluid out of her lungs.  As they carried her over to their table I could hear her let out a loud scream.  It was the most beautiful sound I’ve ever heard.  They worked with her for a few minuets trying to help her get all the meconium out of her lungs; it turns out she had a lot of meconium in her lungs and was having some trouble keeping her oxygen levels up on her own.  They brought her over to us for a few moments and then they wanted to bring her to the NICU to better evaluate her.

I get to hold her too :)

The doctors told Patrick he could come back to the NICU with Clara so he went with her while they finished my surgery.  Here are a few pictures he got while he was there.

Clara gets a special oxygen helmet to help her to keep her oxygen level up.

After I was released from recovery they wheeled my bed into the NICU so I could see Clara again.  She was going to spend some time in the NICU and would not be coming up to my room with me.  I was sad she was not coming up with me but also relieved to know she was being well taken care of and was going to be fine.

I get to really hold Clara Mei for the 1st time. They were helping her with the oxygen mask so I could hold her.

Later that day Xander, Ariel, Grandma, and Grandpa came up to the hospital to meet Clara.
